Interviewing Your Potential Doula

You’ve decided to hire a birth or postpartum doula, but now what? It’s best to interview a few doulas to see who you click with and feel the most comfortable with. Here are a few questions to keep in mind to ask during the interview:


Birth Doula

  1. Are you available for my due date? (And the few weeks leading up to it and after it)
  2. When would you join me in labor?
  3. How do you plan to help me cope during labor?
  4. How can you involve my partner?
  5. What are your thoughts on pain medication and interventions?
  6. Why did you become a doula?
  7. What is your fee and what does it cover?
  8. Do you have a backup doula available? How did you choose them? How often have you used them?
  9. Do you have experience in birth complications?
  10. Do you have references I can speak to?
  11. Do you have additional services you offer?
  12. How long do you stay with me during labor and birth?
  13. What happens if I need a c-section?
  14. What if I have questions between visits? How do I contact you?

Postpartum Doula:

  1. Why did you become a Postpartum Doula?
  2. What is your role as a Postpartum Doula?
  3. What skills and abilities can you bring to my postpartum care?
  4. What would a typical day with us look like?
  5. Are you willing to do______________________________?
  6. What do you know about postpartum care?
  7. Do you offer breastfeeding support? What training do you have in breastfeeding support?
  8. Are you available to answer our questions and concerns even when you are not on duty?
  9. Do you have references I can speak to?

Questions to ask myself:

  1. Do I feel connected with this doula?
  2. Am I comfortable with them being a part of one of my most vulnerable times of my life?
  3. Are they knowledgeable?
  4. Did they ask me questions?
  5. Do they listen well?
  6. Are they interested in my wants and needs?
  7. Are they supportive of my decisions?
  8. Do they have her own agenda or pushy on certain topics?
